A useful handover lets another reviewer understand what was observed, when it was observed and which conclusions remain untested. It should preserve provenance rather than merely collect screenshots.
Create a source register
Give each source a stable reference. Record the URL, capture time, collection method and the person or system responsible for the record.
- Unique source ID
- URL and UTC timestamp
- Original file retained separately from working notes
Separate observation from inference
State what a source visibly shows, then label relationships or attribution as hypotheses until supporting evidence is available.
- Observable facts
- Analyst assessment
- Open questions and alternative explanations
Prepare the decision trail
Record scope, authorization, significant decisions and handovers. Counsel or another specialist should be able to see why an action was considered.
- Matter scope and authority
- Timeline of decisions
- Outstanding preservation or legal questions

Prepare these items before the next step.
